The first choice for many Lithuanians starting to ride a bike is the hybrid bike. You will see them both in cities and in nature. Today, we will discuss why this type of bike is so popular, how it differs from other common bikes, and which hybrid bike would be best for you.
Choosing a bike: a guide to hybrid bikes
What is a Hybrid Bike?
The purpose of a hybrid bike is hinted at by its name. It is a versatile bike that combines features from different types of bikes: from city bikes, it borrows a comfortable seating position; from road bikes, medium or narrow tires; and from mountain bikes, a maneuverable handlebar.
However, don't be surprised to see many different designs when choosing your bike. Hybrid bikes are also divided into different categories: some are more suited for the city, others for nature, longer trips, or sports. Therefore, the frame design, tire width and texture, parts (e.g., brake type), and bike accessories may differ. Although many hybrid bikes are suitable for both men and women, you can also find specially designed women's bikes – a women's hybrid bike features a lower top tube for easier mounting.
Hybrid bikes are often chosen by beginner cyclists, so most of these bikes are made with aluminum frames. This material is very durable but slightly heavier than the carbon frames popular among professionals.
Hybrid vs. Mountain Bike: Main Differences
To the untrained eye, hybrid and mountain bikes may look very similar, but they are not identical. Looking closer, you will notice that mountain bike tires are much thicker and have deeper treads. This is necessary for mountain bikes to easily tackle roots, holes, and sand – the types of surfaces found in forests. Mountain bikes also have more advanced braking systems and suspension, which are not found on hybrid bikes. Finally, the seating position is different – on a mountain bike, you will sit in a more aggressive position, and the handlebars will be even wider to navigate sharp turns.
Hybrid vs. Gravel Bike: Main Differences
Gravel and hybrid bikes share their versatility – they are bikes designed for various surfaces. However, gravel bikes look more like road bikes with frames adapted for thicker tires. They are designed for fast off-road riding due to their more aerodynamic seating position and drop handlebars. While you can also tackle many unpaved roads with a hybrid bike, a gravel bike will be more reliable for riding on sand or very rough surfaces.
Main Hybrid Bike Manufacturers
Many manufacturers produce hybrid bikes, but we recommend choosing from companies known for their sports bikes for professionals. This way, you can be sure that your bike uses the highest quality materials and the latest technologies for comfortable riding. Here are a few manufacturers whose hybrid bikes we recommend to our customers:
Specialized
The American bike manufacturers found the secret to success by creating their bestselling hybrids "Sirrus" and "Sirrus X". These two product lines offer a bike for everyone. Choose from the "Sirrus" line if you are looking for a bike for travel and sports in the city – for riding on bike paths or other smooth surfaces, as "Sirrus" models feature a wide range of gears and narrower tires. The "Sirrus X" models are ideal for those looking for a bike that is comfortable to ride in the forest or on unpaved roads – these bikes are equipped with rougher, wider tires and single front chainring (1X) gear systems.
BMC
The Swiss company BMC has created two hybrid bike lines – BMC 257 and BMC "Alpenchallenge". BMC 257 is every city cyclist's dream, especially for those who commute to work by bike. This bike is designed to make daily rides enjoyable: with the most comfortable seating, modern style, and accessories. The other line, BMC "Alpenchallenge," prioritizes speed over style. The geometry of the "Alpenchallenge" frames matches that of BMC road bikes, making these bikes suitable not only for leisurely rides but also for serious sports. Additionally, all BMC hybrid models are painted with high-quality powder coating, making them look new for a long time.
Cannondale
Cannondale has thought of everyone's comfort and created the "Quick" hybrid bikes, which come with both women's (lower top tube) and men's frames. However, if you are looking for an exceptional hybrid bike, Cannondale also has something to offer – the Cannondale "Bad Boy" is unforgettable for its innovative fork that connects with the wheel structure only on the left side. All Cannondale hybrid bikes are very durable, and some models even have front suspension for comfortable riding on all surfaces.
Trek
The sturdy and lightweight Trek "Dual Sport" hybrid bikes are ideal for nature lovers. Equipped with hydraulic brakes and a frame that accommodates travel bike bags, these models invite you on adventures in and out of the city. According to Trek, this high-quality bike can withstand all challenges.
Electric Hybrid Bike
For customers looking for exceptional comfort, we recommend checking out the electric hybrid bike models. The electric bike technology will make pedaling easier – pedaling an electric "hybrid" is up to 4 times easier. With an electric bike, you can easily conquer hills and comfortably carry loads – items, groceries, or even children to kindergarten. VELONOVA's range includes the city-oriented Specialized "Vado" and the nature trip-ready Specialized "Tero" and BMC "Alpenchallenge AMP". These hybrid bikes have 240-250 W motors and batteries with up to 710 Wh capacity, allowing you to cover over a hundred kilometers on a single charge.
