Rear Bike Light with Radar – For Those Who Want to Feel Safe on the Road
Although bike lane infrastructure is improving, many cyclists, especially those who ride actively, still have to include busy road sections in their routes. To help cyclists feel safer, Garmin has developed a multifunctional device – the Varia rear bike light with radar. In this article, we discuss how it works and why more and more cyclists are interested in these bike lights.
What is a Rear Light with Radar?
A rear light with radar is an intelligent device that functions as a red flashing rear light while also monitoring the road to detect objects approaching from behind up to a distance of 140 meters. When synchronized with a GPS computer or smartphone, the cyclist has an audible and visual alert system, allowing them to stay focused on the road ahead and avoid unexpected obstacles, thus reducing the risk of accidents.
Advantages of the Varia Rear Light with Radar
First and foremost, Varia radars are excellent lights that shine brightly and last long, all while looking stylish. The Varia radar light can last up to 16 hours on a single charge, while the Varia radar with a camera can record and illuminate for up to 6 hours. This operating time is sufficient for all needs. The light's visibility extends up to 1.6 km, and for those who ride in groups, there's a PELOTON mode that offers a softer, non-dazzling flash. The lights also feature a daytime flash mode that ensures drivers notice you even during the day.
These lights are easily paired with other devices such as the Garmin Edge computer and other devices. For those who use their smartphone as the primary screen, the Varia app will be useful. The lights can also be integrated with various navigation apps from other developers.
How to Choose the Right Rear Light with Radar?
Currently, Garmin offers three different rear lights with radar models. They differ in their applications and operating time after charging.
If you ride mostly on paved roads
Road cyclists will benefit the most from the advanced Varia series light – the RCT715 model with radar and camera. When the radar detects vehicles approaching from behind, the cyclist is alerted, and the camera starts recording. If an incident is detected, the footage is saved, providing the cyclist with all the necessary evidence in case of an accident. The footage is easily accessible using the Varia app on your smartphone.
If you are looking for a versatile option
For those who ride less frequently on paved roads but want to feel safe when sharing the road with cars, the Varia RTL 515 rear light with radar is ideal. It does not have a camera, but it effectively alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind, helping you avoid accidents on the road. In daylight flash mode, the Varia RTL 515 operates for up to 16 hours.
If you have an electric bike
Garmin has developed the eRTL 615 radar rear light specifically for electric bikes, which does not have a battery. This device can be connected to a compatible e-bike and works similarly to the Varia RTL 515 model.
If your bike already has an integrated rear light
If you already have a rear light you like or it’s integrated into your bike’s construction, you can choose the Varia RVR 315 radar. Like other Varia devices, it sends audible, visual, or vibration alerts through a GPS computer or smartphone. The radar operates for up to 7 hours on a single charge.
Smart Front Lights in the Set
If you are interested in bike light sets, Garmin has something to offer. The Garmin Varia UT800 is a smart front light that, when synchronized with a Garmin GPS computer, adapts to the cyclist’s speed and riding style by adjusting the lighting accordingly. The 800-lumen beam ensures visibility even during daylight hours, while its power-efficient battery provides up to 25 hours of operation (in flashing mode). Accessories allow this lightweight, 140 g light to be mounted on the handlebar, computer holder, or helmet.
The Importance of Lighting for Cyclists
You may wonder why such smart and sometimes expensive devices are needed. However, bike lights are probably the most important accessories a cyclist can have. Traffic regulations state that a red light at the rear and a white light at the front are mandatory. It’s no coincidence – these are the primary tools that help prevent accidents. So, before heading out, make sure your lights are charged and shine brightly enough. We always recommend keeping the cheapest, low-lumen lights for bike paths and using more powerful lights when sharing the road with cars.
